Floating Pond Plants
Floating pond plants are some of the most important plants you can purchase for your pond. These water plants are nutrient sponges that use up fish waste as a food source helping to starve off algae in your pond. They are so powerful at filtering water that back in the 1970's waste water treatment plants down south used water hyacinth as a pre-filter to the water entering the water treatment plant. Floating water plants also provide shade and protection for your fish keeping them safe and happy. These plants are also some of the easiest plants to grow as long as their is an abundant supply of nutrition in your pond water. This may only be a problem in new ponds that are not yet established. Mature ponds for the most part have plenty of nutrition in the water for your floating plants to flourish. If you have a new pond you will need to fertilize your these plants with fertilizer to keep them green and healthy. |

Water hyacinth are free-floating semi-tropical annual pond plant. The dark leaves of this floating plant are circular in shape attached to a spongy, air filled bulb. this floating plant has a thick, heavily branched, dark fibrous root system. The water hyacinth has very nice light blue to violet flowers located on a tall spike. Water hyacinth are very aggressive pond plants and in our climate here in the U.S.that can be a good thing.
Water hyacinth absorb huge amounts of excess nutrients from pond water, resulting in a clearer, healthier pond. Their fast growth also helps to shade the pond, which helps in several ways. More shade equals less algae growth. The extra coverage gives a safe haven for fish to escape predators and the huge floating roots give baby fish an excellent place to live and thrive. This floating plant is a must have for great water quality.
