Submerged pond plants are a must have in any pond or water garden. They compete directly with the algae in your pond for nutrients, keeping your pond clean and clear.
Remember you should use one bunch of submerged pond plants for every 1 square foot of pond surface area. For example an 11x16 pond would need around 25 bunches of submerged pond plants planted in the bottom of the pond. 11+16 = 27 Just round off the number you get to five, Our Suggested minimum order is 25 submerged plants. This is a perfect start for most backyard ponds. Submerged plants are also perfect for well lighted aquariums. These pond plants are some of the most important plants you can add to your pond.

Anacharis
Anacharis: have narrow deep green pointed leaves with long branches stems. Anacharis is the most common submerged pond plant. Used for both pond and aquarium use for good reason. These submerged pond plants break down fish waste and left over nutrients in your pond, controlling algae growth. For the control of algae use one bunch for every foot of pond surface area. Small fishing weights can be used to sink the submerged plants to the bottom without planting. Anacharis also make an ideal spot for breeding fish, as they provide a great place for little fish to hide from predators. Anacharis will grow in water 6" inches to 4' feet deep or in full sun to partial shade. Anacharis is a vary fast grower feeding primarily through its leaves. It is not necessary that it be planted since soil is not needed for their survival. It can root in the pond bottom or float freely. This hardy submerged pond plant will survive very low temperatures.

Vallisneria
Vallisneria: Large, reed like submerged pond plant, has pale green leaves that grow toward the surface like ribbons. Use this pond plant with weighted anchors or containers. Plant several bunches together in a pot with soil. They can also be planted in your pond gravel. Vallisneria does best when grown in shade, but can also be planted in partial shade to sun in water 6"-24" deep. Anacharis is winter dormant in all climates. This is a great submerged pond plant for providing food and shelter for fish, and filtering the water to control free floating algae. Vallisneria is easily re-grown by removing and rooting the clustered plants which grow from the creeping root system. This plant can grow rather large and can form a dense cover for ponds making your pond water cooler.

Hornwort
Hornwort: is a flowerless submerged pond plant with green bristly foliage and small branched stems. This submerged pond plant does not have to be planted; just place the foliage below the waters surface. This submerged plant adds fresh oxygen in a pond or aquarium. Hornwort plants derive all their nutrients from your pond water and will compete with the algae by consuming the nutrients available in the pond. Hornwort also provides a good area for fish to spawn and hide. Although it is considered tropical, most of the time this plant will survive winter climates. This submerged plant is hardy from zones 5-10
Red Ludwigia
| Red Ludwigia: is a very nice submerged pond plant with small arrow head shaped leaves. The under-bellies of these leaves are bright red in color making them very popular with customers, and aquarium hobbiest. Red ludwigia like all submerged plants does a great job controling algae in your pond as it uses the same food source, thus starving off algae growth. This submerged pond plant loves a full sun pond and is a very fast grower.
