Hardy Water Lotus InformationDescription The lotus is perennial pond plant growing from a rhizome tuber. Its rounded leaves can reach large sizes up to 22" inches in diameter. The first leaves that appear, are flat and float on the ponds surface. They are followed by thicker, tube shaped leaves with wavy edges that may stand anywhere from 2' to 4' feet above the water. The lotus leaves are coated with a waxy film, upon which water forms glittering droplets. The thick flower stalk grows above the leaves ending in large strong smelling white, pink, or red blooms, appearing one at a time. Each flower lasts from 3 to5 days and gets darker with age. Ranging in size from 4" to 7" inches. Lotus cultivation Hardy water lotuses are generally grown from rhizomes or tubers planted in late May or early June. If a lotus is to be grown in a pond or water garden, it should be planted in shallow water 12" to 18" inches below the surface, directly in the bottom or in a container 30" inches tall and 14" inches across. The water temperature must be at least 65° during the growing season. They soil must be very rich, i.e. regular unfertilized top soil. Fertilizer tablets should also be added. Plant the rhizome horizontally, on a slight angle, and cover all but the last 2.5 inches of the growing top with soil. The water lotus prefers a very sunny location. Cooler temperatures may cause the plant to go into dormancy, and it may be difficulty to re-coax it to bloom. For better growth and flowering, slow-release fertilizer tablets may be used once a month and the first flowers should be removed as soon as they fade. In our climate, it is best to lift the rhizomes in the fall. They should be stored in their original soil, covered with 5 to10 inches of water and kept cool 5° to10°C safe from any risk of freezing. Plants should be divided every three or four years.
