Water Lotus Planting Instructions:

When you receive your new lotus. We recommend that you float your lotus tuber in aged pond water in a small tub or bucket for 10-16 days in a warm sunny place before potting. This will allows the lotus tuber to sprout and will increase your chances in growing lotus.

When your new lotus has sprouted and is ready to plant, fill up a 10 gallon or 12 gallon pot with 6"inches of non- fertilized topsoil mixed with pea stone at a rate of 60% topsoil 30% pea stone. This will improve aeration in the soil.

Now place your new lotus tuber with the new sprouted growing tips straight up. Gently press the tuber into the soil being very careful not to damage the brand new growing tips. Add a thick 1" layer of gravel to cover the soil  and the tuber. This will keep the tuber from floating.

Lotus are super heavy feeders, but should not be fertilized until they have grown up two to three leaves. After they have leaves they should be given 2 tablets of fertilizer per pot. pushed down into the soil about 1 inch.

Place your pot in the pond in no deeper than 8" inches deep of water over the top of the pot. Lotus have to be potted because they tend to be invasive. Following these instructions will ensure big healthy lotus.

Hardy Water Lotus Information

Description

The lotus is perennial pond plant growing from a rhizome tuber. Its rounded leaves can reach large sizes up to 22" inches in diameter. The first leaves that appear, are flat and float on the ponds surface. They are followed by thicker, tube shaped leaves with wavy edges that may stand anywhere from 2' to 4' feet above the water. The lotus leaves are coated with a waxy film, upon which water forms glittering droplets. The thick flower stalk grows above the leaves ending in large strong smelling white, pink, or red blooms, appearing one at a time. Each flower lasts from 3 to5 days and gets darker with age. Ranging in size from 4" to 7" inches.

Lotus cultivation

Hardy water lotuses are generally grown from rhizomes or tubers planted in late May or early June. If a lotus is to be grown in a pond or water garden, it should be planted in shallow water 12" to 18" inches below the surface, directly in the bottom or in a container 30" inches tall and 14" inches across. The water temperature must be at least 65° during the growing season. They soil must be very rich, i.e. regular unfertilized top soil. Fertilizer tablets should also be added. Plant the rhizome horizontally, on a slight angle, and cover all but the last 2.5 inches of the growing top with soil.

The water lotus prefers a very sunny location. Cooler temperatures may cause the plant to go into dormancy, and it may be difficulty to re-coax it to bloom. For better growth and flowering, slow-release fertilizer tablets may be used once a month and the first flowers should be removed as soon as they fade.

In our climate, it is best to lift the rhizomes in the fall. They should be stored in their original soil, covered with 5 to10 inches of water and kept cool 5° to10°C safe from any risk of freezing. Plants should be divided every three or four years.
